Final Wound-Check

One week after the last appointment, where we had uncovered a blister, I returned to the plaster room for the silicone dressing to be removed. The technician had explained to me that due to the nature of the silicone having holes in it, it couldn't be left on for too long as new skin might grow through it and that would not be good!

We arrived a little before our appointment time, as we usually do, but we weren't able to go straight in. The plaster room was very busy, much busier than any other time. I think we did all of our waiting in this one appoinment as we've been so lucky and only had to wait about five minutes max any other time! We were there for over an hour but finally we went in.

The plaster room technician pulled out the silicone dressing and was happy with the way the toes looked. She was able to do this without removing the plaster cast which was good because it meant the appoinment was shorter but bad because that meant we couldn't get any foot photos. The silicone had some blood/gunk on it but the technician said that this wasn't a problem.

Before we left, she inserted another dressing inbetween my toes to protect and soothe the area. This particular dressing was covered in Vaseline so it would be gentle and softening for the skin. As we were two weeks away from my final appointment to have the plaster removed, she also gave us some of the dressing as well as the tools she had used (tweezers and what can only be described as a pokey stick) so that my mum could replace the dressing the following week without us having to return to the hospital. She showed mum how to cut the dressing to size and ease it inbetween the toes using the pokey stick.

We left with instructions to call the plaster room if we had any problems but hopeful that we wouldn't be back until two weeks time when it should all be coming off!
